Commonly referred to as the “Valley of the Sun”, the city’s metropolitan area is a major economic force with dominating tourism and manufacturing industries. Phoenix has a rich cultural history beginning with the Hohokam civilization in 1 AD, then the O’odham and Sobaipuri tribes, then Spanish explorers, and eventually American settlers in 1867. After the development of air conditioning in the 1950s, the subsequent arrival of industry to the area greatly expanded Phoenix as a city. Today, Phoenix is known for its desert gardens, elaborate pools, hotel resorts, and southwest-infused cuisine – all with an affordable cost of living and plenty of job opportunities.
